Why do people want flying cars? We already basically have them. They're called airplanes. Doesn't make sense. As soon as it begins flight does it remain a car or does it become an airplane or a helo? Same thing goes with cars that can go on water. I'm tired and confused,

We want a method of air transportation that doesn't cost $600 a shot, have to be planned 3 weeks in advance, and require getting to third base with a federal employee.

Most people's experience with airplanes is more that of a passenger on a flying bus than in a flying car. That and you can't park one in the driveway.

I was more talking small prop planes not airliners.

People want flying cars because Paul Moller has been promising them for decades.

Still can't drive one on the road. You have to drive to the airport in your regular car, transfer all your shit, fly to the closest airport to your destination, rent a different car if available (or have one parked waiting at every destination), transfer all your shit again, drive to your final location, do what you came to do, than repeat the whole process in reverse to get home.

Sorry, but our current "flying cars" are like having to park your car on the side of the road and hoof-it 6 miles back to your house. With all your stuff. Or, I suppose, you could load up the wagon and hitch up the mule team, if your the 1%.

Barriers of entry. Planes are very expensive hobbies, well out of the range of the average consumer, and storing them is nigh impossible for places where congestion on the streets is highest.

Because the average consumer is going to be able to fly a plar?

Your question was about flying cars, and how come people want them if we already have small planes, right?

Well, people don't want something that's worse than a car at doing what a car does. If we get flying cars, they need to be able to be within a reasonable price range AND do the one thing a car can't: drive without roads, aka, no traffic jams (or at least, much more area for commuting).

Prop planes do not serve that purpose, not even close, for the reasons I mentioned.

People want flying cars because there is this misguided notion that they will be the only one with a flying car. The thought is that if you're sitting in traffic you could just fly over all of the congestion.

In practice, if the average joe can have it, everyone has it. Therefore, fundamentally, your traffic problems aren't solved, they're just in a new place.

Personally, I think Google is on to something. If your personal transport is capable of VTOL, the best way to get it FAA approved for everyone's use is by pure automation.
